Can I Use a US Dyson Airwrap in the UK?
Here is why it's a bad idea and you should rent a UK Airwrap instead
Will my US Dyson Airwrap work in the United Kingdom?
Short answer is no, it likely won't turn on and we don't think you shouldn't risk your $700 machine!
We see a lot of discussion online about how to make your Dyson Airwrap dual voltage. We've even seen some 'Dyson Airwrap converters' for sale. That's why we created this simple guide. It will help you understand why taking the Dyson Airwrap from the USA to the UK won't work and what could go wrong.
Why won't my Dyson Airwrap work in the UK?
Unfortunately, you can't just use an adaptor plug. The power setup is different in the USA and the UK/Europe. The UK sockets give out different Voltage, Wattage and Frequencies.
Even if it turns on briefly with a converter its unlikely to stay on. On top of this, using a converter is likey to damage the motor.
Here's why:
The converter won't cope. Most manufacturers design travel converters for lower power devices like phone chargers or laptops. Plugging in something much stronger, like the Airwrap, can overload the converter. This may cause it to overheat, melt, or blow a fuse.
Unstable Power: Converters (even expensive ones) don't always give a smooth steady output. They can produce spikes and drops. This can fry the Airwraps motor and sensitive control boards.
Frequency still unmatched: Even if a converter can lower the power to the Airwrap, it won't change the frequency. The motor will run unevenly, which can make it overheat.
Why doesn't my Dyson warranty cover motor damage?
Dyson’s warranties exclude damage caused by using the product on the wrong voltage or with converters. They consider this to void the warranty.
How can Dyson tell I've used the wrong voltage?
Incorrect power the damage is quite obvious to a technician. They would see things like scorched coils, blown circuits or melted components. This type of damage is also quite diffrent from normal wear and tear.
Is it worth the risk to at least try with a converter?
It might be tempting to give it a go, but we don’t think it’s worth the gamble. If the wrong power supply damages a motor, you can't fix it. This could mean you're stuck using terrible hotel hair dryers for the rest of your trip. Even if your airwrap still turns on you may have future issues with poor power supply or the motor suddenly cutting out all together.
Can I rent a UK Dyson Airwrap instead?
Yes! Rentoora rents UK Dyson Airwraps for lots of USA to UK travelers that want to enjoy a beautiful blow dry on their trip. We deliver to hotels across the United Kingdom, and it's easy to return your rental when you're done!
More notes on Voltage, Wattage and Frequency Differences
Voltage: US models are engineered for a 120-volt supply, whereas the UK/EU runs at 230 volts. The higher potential difference in the UK places excessive electrical stress on the motor windings, leading to overheating and possible burnout of internal components.
Wattage: Both regions’ models operate at roughly 1,300–1,500 watts, but the power draw is calculated differently due to the input voltage. When used with a step-down converter, this high wattage demand can exceed the converter’s rated capacity, causing overload or thermal failure.
Frequency: The mains supply in the US is 60 hertz, compared with 50 hertz in the UK/EU. This discrepancy alters the operating speed of the digital motor, reducing efficiency and impairing cooling, which increases the risk of thermal stress and premature failure.Dyson designs their hair tools to work with the electrical setups (Voltage, Wattage and Frequency) in the region where there sold.
